Hi, reader. I wrote this in 2001 and it's now more than five years old. So it may be very out of date; the world, and I, have changed a lot since I wrote it! I'm keeping this up for historical archive purposes, but the me of today may 100% disagree with what I said then. Red Cross: Steve pointed out to me that: (1) blood banks can separate out, say, plasma from whole blood and maybe keep that fresher longer than whole blood, and (2) the Red Cross doesn't need blood if there's not a shortage (unless they're vampires), and (3) sometimes blood banks lack more of one blood type than of another. As well, a recent Slate article explains that the Red Cross took this opportunity to expand its reserve, which is good.
